Last week I wrote to you about…

one of the first paradoxes I ever learned to hold — money and meaning.

That you don’t have to choose between a soulful life and a prosperous one. Between wanting more… and keeping your peace.

This week I want to take you deeper. Into the paradox that changed not just how I hold my life… but how I hold myself.

And I think it might be the one you most need to hear.

Let me describe a feeling. See if you know it.

You’re growing. Stepping up. Reaching for the bigger thing — the strategy call, the launch, the raise, the visibility, the version of your life that’s a size up from the one you’ve been living.

And right there, at the exact moment you stretch… it floods in.

Who do you think you are?
You’re not ready.
Everyone’s going to find out you don’t actually know what you’re doing.

The self-doubt. The imposter feeling. The fear.

And here’s what almost all of us do with it: we read it as a verdict. As proof we’re not enough. As a stop sign that says turn back, you’re not cut out for this.

But what if it’s the opposite?

I was working with a woman recently — smart, capable, incredibly good with people —  right on the edge of a beautiful expansion. And she was drowning in that imposter feeling, convinced it meant something had gone wrong.

That she wasn’t ready. That she didn’t have enough — enough skill, enough knowledge. That she just wasn’t enough — full stop.

And I got to offer her the reframe that changes everything:

The imposter feeling and the growth are the same doorway.

The self-doubt didn’t show up because she was failing. It showed up because she was expanding.

It arrives precisely when you step beyond the edge of who you’ve been — because a part of you is being asked to become someone new, and that’s tender, unfamiliar, vulnerable ground.

The fear isn’t evidence you’re off track.

It’s evidence you’re at the threshold.

Same door. You’ve just been reading the sign backwards.

Now — here’s where what I teach parts ways with almost everything else.

Most of the world will tell you to push through it. Grip harder. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Silence the inner critic and force your way past.

I used to teach that too. Years ago. I said it, I believed it, I lived it.

I don’t anymore.

You don’t push through the fear. You turn toward it.

Not to fight it, not to fix it — just to meet it. To put a hand on it, almost, and say: I see you. I know you’re scared. You’re welcome here.

Because that fear isn’t your enemy. It’s a tender, protective part of you — and it has a deeper desire for you.

Often it’s trying to say something wise: I don’t want you to overwork. I don’t want you to abandon yourself again. I don’t want you to get hurt. It’s not trying to stop your life. It’s trying to protect it.

And when you meet it with acceptance instead of force — when it finally feels heard — it softens. It stops digging its heels in. (Because nothing in us relaxes until it feels accepted. It just digs in harder.)

And then it lets you through the doorway it was standing in front of.

Picture the bouncer at the door. As long as you’re shoving past him, he plants his feet and blocks you. But the moment you stop, look him in the eye, and get on his side — ah, you’re just trying to protect me — he steps aside.

And walks you in himself.

That’s the difference between white-knuckling your way to the next level… and being let through by the very part of you that was standing guard.

And underneath all of it is the paradox I most want you to hold:

You are already whole, exactly as you are — and you get to grow.

Both. At once.

You don’t have to fix yourself to be worthy of the next level. You’re not a problem to be solved before you’re allowed to expand. The self-doubt doesn’t mean you’re broken.

It means you’re human, standing at a threshold, becoming.

Whole and growing. Never one or the other. Always both.

Here’s the part that moves me most.

When you stop splitting yourself into good and bad — arrived and failing, worthy and not-yet — something extraordinary happens.

You stop splitting everyone else that way too.

The harshness you’ve aimed at yourself for years — the impossible standard, the you should be further along by now — it softens.

And that softness spills outward. You start meeting other people the way you’ve finally learned to meet yourself: as whole, and growing. Doing their best at their own threshold.

I’ve come to believe two things would change the world.

If each of us truly knew who we were — and had the courage to live it.

And if we met ourselves, and then each other, with a whole lot more compassion.

Understanding. And compassion.

And paradox — learning to hold the both/and — is the doorway to both.

This — this — is the heart of how my work has evolved. It’s the deepest thing I teach now: how to hold the both/and, meet the fear, the self-doubt, the self-criticism as an ally, and stop tearing yourself between who you are and who you’re becoming.

Because you were never meant to choose between them.

You get to be whole. And you get to grow.

At the very same time.

So, the next time the self-doubt comes, try whispering “ahhhh, I must be at a threshold,” instead of “something’s wrong with me.” See what softens.

I’d love to know what shifts for you. Share it in the comments below — I read every single one, and always respond.

Lots of love,

Carmen xo

P.S. If this stirred something — if you can feel your own doorway — there are two ways to start working with me:

To begin: Create Your Dream Year ON DEMAND, where all my work starts — carmenmarshall.com/create.

OR, if you’re ready to go straight to one specific block: I work with a small number of women 1:1 on exactly that. Book a free call here, and we’ll feel into it together — 1:1 Clarity Call.

PPS: I shared this with my email community first — a few days before it appeared here. The email is where I write most personally, and where you’ll always hear things first. If that’s a room you’d like to be in, come join us.
