The moment no one’s watching

I had a small thing happen this week with…

a company I’ve admired for years.

Nothing dramatic. A tiny billing mix-up — the kind of thing that gets sorted in two lines and a bit of goodwill.

But it didn’t get sorted.

Instead I got the warm words… and the closed door. The lovely tone… wrapped around a no that never quite looked me in the eye.

And I noticed something shift in me. Not anger, exactly. More like frustration… and a little ache. Because this was a brand that speaks so beautifully about care. About integrity. About people over profit.

And in this one small, unglamorous moment — where there was nothing to gain and no one watching — the inside didn’t match the outside.

Here’s why I’m telling you.

Not to make them wrong. They’re a good company having a very human moment, and heaven knows I’ve had mine.

I’m telling you because it landed on me as a question:

​​​​​​​Where might that be true for me?

Because it’s so easy — especially as we grow — to build a business whose words are luminous… and whose systems say something else.

The soul says “you matter here.”

The automation says “you’re a ticket number.”

The soul says “come as you are.”

The policy says “only if you fit the box.”

Not from malice. Never from malice. It happens because a growing business runs on systems — and systems don’t have a soul unless we keep putting one back in.

The values on the website aren’t the test.

The test is the tiny moment.

The refund you didn’t have to give. The email you almost didn’t answer. The client who slipped through the cracks. The follow-up you sent to someone who was never going to buy — just because you said you would.

That’s where “does the inside match the outside” actually gets answered. Not in the mission statement. In the moment no one’s watching.

And here’s the part I want you to feel:

This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being awake. It’s about knowing — really knowing — what you stand for, so that when the small moment comes, you don’t hesitate. You already know who you are.

Which brings me to the thing underneath all of it.

You can’t live your values… if you’ve never named them.

Most of us think we know ours. But when I actually sit people down and ask — “what are the three or four things you will not betray, even when it costs you?” — there’s almost always a pause.

Not because they don’t have values. Because no one ever asked them to make them conscious.

And what stays unconscious… drifts. It bends under pressure. It gets overridden by the tired version of you, the busy version, the just-get-through-today version.

But what you’ve named — what you’ve written down and looked in the eye — that’s what holds. That’s what your systems can be built around. That’s what keeps the inside and the outside as one thing.

This is exactly why I created the Authentic Code inside my work.

It’s not a vision board. It’s not a list of pretty words. It’s the small, clear set of truths you decide to live by — the code that runs underneath every decision, every email, every tiny moment when no one’s watching…

…so that the person your soul knows you to be, and the person who actually shows up on a Tuesday, are finally the same person.

So here’s your invitation this week. Nothing big.

Just notice one small moment — one where there was nothing to gain, no one watching — and ask yourself gently:

Did the inside match the outside?

No judgment if it didn’t. The minute we judge, we get stuck. That noticing is the work. That’s you, waking up to yourself.

The one with ourselves.

That one’s the real one. And so worth exploring. ♡
